Nozell genealogy manuscript is in the mail

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2003

I just mailed out my updated ‘Nozell Genealogy’ to all known
descendants (only 19 families!) of Anthony Vincent Nozell (b. ca
1875). A whole raft of little ones have been born since it was last
sent out in 1994.

Geek Note: No Microsoft products were used in the creating of
the booklet. GNU based toolkit: debian/linux, lifelines, LaTeX, cups,
emacs, imagemagick, etc

The final batch of 54 more genealogy images

Thursday, May 8th, 2003

I’m finally done slicing and dicing those scans from last weekend.
Here is a resolution reduced shot of me, my father and sister circa
1969 by the regionally famous Long Island Big Duck. It is still
around, but apparently it has been relocated from the original
location.

362(!) new old genealogy images (the last bit tomorrow night)

Thursday, May 8th, 2003

Wow I really cranked through the second batch of old family images!
Over 220Mb of images tonight versus yesterday’s paltry 124Mb. To scan
it faster, I put as many photos as would fit on the scanner, now there
is only one photo is in each file. After cutting apart some more
scans tomorrow, the next step is to put names/places/dates to each
photo based on the handwritten notes of my mother.

If I’ve given you a username and password, take a look at href="http://www.nozell.com/genealogy/private/">http://www.nozell.com/genealogy

under ‘day2′. As with ‘day1′, most of the images are from of the HULL
and LENT lines and a few of the NOZELL, SMITH, ODELL lines.

Off to bed!

121 new old genealogy images (more tomorrow night)

I spent the evening cropping and organizing 121 old family images
using gimp on my trusty href="http://www.fsf.org">gnu/ href="http://www.linux.org">linux href="http://www.debian.org/">debian href="http://www.nozell.com/cgi/blosxom/linux/debian/laptop">laptop.

family pictures — including one of me naked!

Sunday, May 4th, 2003

My parents were in town this week and brought a whole bunch of old
family photos that I prompted scanned in. My mother was nice enough
to sit there and write a description of each image. Eventually they
will turn up in various genealogy mailings sent out to cousins.

I’ve been trying to think how to integrate blogging, wiki,
whatever to encourage various family members and genealogists surfing
from search engines to collaborate on identifying and sharing images

Without further ado — here is a picture of me buck naked on August 18, 1964
.

(Well, that should certainly drive up google search traffic to
this blog. Now go
away, there is no more nudity here.)

Gideon Taylor/Sarah Burr 1857 family bible images

Wednesday, April 16th, 2003

As mentioned a few days ago, I liberally licensed some scans of the Gideon Taylor and Sarah Burr’s 1857 family bible I bought on ebay.com last year.

It is now available here:

Gideon Taylor/Sarah Burr family bible CD under the CC Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 1.0 license

Sunday, April 13th, 2003

I just released my first project under a Creative Commons license, specifically the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike1.0 license.

It is a CD I sent to Wendy’s siblings that contained a number of
scans of the Gideon Taylor/Sarah Burr 1857 bible CD I bought on
ebay.com along with a number of genealogy reports showing the lineage
from those folks to today’s generations.

Tomorrow I’ll be putting a copy of the CD in the mail for a second
cousin of Wendy who is also a Taylor/Burr descendant.

Feels good to add to genealogy knowledge base of other people…

See here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcn/sets/72157603912480432 for scans of the genealogy related pages.

Using spam to aid genealogy

Tuesday, April 1st, 2003

My surname is very rare — in fact the one NOZELLs in the world (that
I can find) are all descended from Anthony Vincent Nozell who came
here in 1875 from ‘Russia’ and spoke Polish.

Anyway, I got the following spam that contains a whole bunch of nozell
email addresses — some I don’t recognise as couins’ last know
addresses. Time to contact them…

HP Photo Scanner

Friday, January 3rd, 2003

I’ve been meaning to scan in all the old 3×5 and 4×6 snapshots and find that using a full size USB-based scanner is slow going. This weekend’s COMPUSA flyer had the H
P Photo Scanner
for only $49!

Under W2k/W98 it works just fine, but I really want to have this working under Linux. It looks like it may be possible — the windows software says it isn’t a TWAIN but rather a USB mass storage device. Linux (debian/testing) sees it as an unknown storage device. Google hasn’t turned up yet…

One drawback is it draws power from the USB cable, but my laptop’s USB hub doesn’t doesn’t supply power. Desktop systems are fine.

Gideon Taylor Family Bible CD

Wednesday, January 1st, 2003

Between the chess and UNO attack games with the kids, I’ve started pulling together scans of the Gideon Taylor/Sarah Burr family bible as well as some pretty genealogy reports and will send them out to my wife’s siblings.
